Consequently, the university supports global activities and the internationalization of the curriculum by observing local, regional and global health education events, and by engaging in community and international activities.

In keeping with the United Nation’s International Women’s Day theme: “Equality for Women is Progress for All,” St. Helen University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, St. Lucia, (SHU), conducted medical screening for diabetes and hypertension.

Under its own theme “Equal Access to Health Education and Services for Women,” the University held an exhibition to educate and screen both women and men on common health conditions. Additionally, faculty and students advised members of the public on prevention approaches.

Hematopathology Research Professor Visits SHU

St. Helen University School of Medicine & Health Sciences welcomed its first visiting lecturer for 2014, Hematopathology research professor Dr. Alden E. Chesney, MD, FASCP.

Dr. Chesney is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, and works full-time at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in the Department of Clinical Pathology. He has published several joint research papers, and is actively engaged in Hematology research.

St. Helen University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, St. Lucia (SHU), was last month granted approval by the General Nursing Council of St Lucia (GNC), for the implementation of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSc.N).

SHU awards staff, welcomes students for 1st Anniversary

St. Helen University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, St. Lucia, commemorated its 1st Anniversary with a Welcome and Awards Ceremony for new students and staff respectfully.

At the ceremony, the Board of Directors and Management recognized the stellar contributions of two staff members who have been with SHU from the beginning.

SHU Head of Nursing program encourages children to “Move for Health”

St. Helen University’s Head of Nursing Program Dr. Prisca Regis-Andrew RN, MW, PhD encouraged primary school children to embrace physical activity and movement in an effort to reduce obesity and diabetes among young people.

Her comments were made at an end of semester Jump Rope Festival held to usher in the December break.
The event’s theme: “Eradicating Illness, Promoting Health and Wellness” stressed the importance of physical activity especially among children, in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, said Laborie Boys School Principal Julian D’Archeville.

St. Helen University School of Medicine & Health Sciences recently welcomed new pharmacology professor, Dr. Lexley Pinto Pereira.
Dr. Pereira’s academic prowess is notable. She earned the Dean’s Award for Medicine and was a first rank holder for the MD in Pharmacology program at Bombay University.

Dr. Stephen Carmichael receives prestigious award

St. Helen University’s Dr. Stephen Carmichael, member of the SHU Board of Governors and visiting Professor of Anatomy receives prestigious award from Mayo Clinic.

Stephen Carmichael, Ph.D., D.Sc., has been named the recipient of the 2013 Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award honors individuals who exemplify Mayo Clinic’s ideals and mission. Dr. Carmichael was recognized at a private black-tie dinner at the Mayo Foundation House in Rochester on Oct. 21.
